YWCA Building, Karachi

A question: which Soparivala is the building named after? Answer: not sure. It could well have been Seth Shapurji Hormusji Soparivala who arrived in Karachi in the 1850s and proved to be a person with tremendous business acumen. He also took part in welfare activities and contributed a great deal to the refinement of Karachi. Since the broken tile suggests a date somewhere in the 1860s and the BVS School began functioning as the Parsi Balakshala in 1859 by virtue of Seth Soparivala’s kind monetary support, the conjecture is that the residential building under discussion may have been his brainchild.
