Karachi Boat Club, Karachi

From records available it appear that boats were built locally in 1881.

Subsequently very early in the Club's existence, boats were constructed by builders in England and with very few exceptions all the Club boats have always been built in England, as locally built boats were at that time found too heavy for racing. Although at one time it is apparent that best sheik boats were in use, the local conditions and rough water have been the cause of clinker built boats, both Light and Heavy, being the standard Club boats from about 1900.

Speaking of boats, the Club, in 1968, built the first pair of light clinker racing boats ever to be built in Pakistan (as far as could be ascertained). These were coxless pairs, and were excellent boats in every respect. A pair of clinker light sculls was also built during 1968. It is interesting to note the boat builder built these on our own “hard” affording all members rowing or otherwise, to watch the progress of the boats construction.

During the period 1970-72, further 4 clinker fours, 2 clinker pairs and 2 clinker sculling boats were constructed by Boat Club's own carpenter and staff. In 1980, to commemorate the centenary 1981, two each of shell fours, shell pairs and shell sculling boats were imported from Australia.

Karachi Boat Club first time participated in rowing competition 1982. Mr. Hadi Afshar of Karachi Boat Club represented Pakistan.

To promote rowing in the Country Karachi Boat Club donated two tub fours along with 8 rowing oars to Punjab Rowing Association in 1982.

To promote the rowing activity in the Province/Country our Club proposed to hold an annual championship named China Creek Rowing Championship and hosted First China Creek Rowing Championship held from 26th February to 1st March, 1985. Teams from KPT, Sindh Rowing Association, PIA, Pak. Navy and K.B.C. participated in the championship. Trophy was won by K.B.C.

Karachi Boat Club hosted 6th National Rowing Championship from 27th to 29th December, 1985.
