Soon after 1947s partition an enlightened class of the town sprang up to the address the issue of educational crisis in the wake of mass migration of Hindu teachers. In this regard a joint body was formed called as Muslim Education Society. Under umbrella of pro education MES, series of schools, which gone unfunctional, were revived, besides a large number of new schools and colleges were opened. Until 1972, as many as 18 institutions in the city were established.
The Islamia College, Sukkur, established in 1955 was also the part of same mission. Before the establishment of this college, the residents of Sukkur had to go to far off places like Shikarpur, Hyderabad, and Karachi for higher education. The college was initially started with arts and commerce faculty in a local school in the evening. Subsequently Islamia College Board acquired a big plot of land on a hill near the District Jail, where the present campus was established. In 1965 postgraduate classes in Urdu, Sindhi, and Muslim History were started, and in 1967 postgraduate classes in English and Economics and degree courses in Science were also introduced.
In 1973 the College was reorganized and predesignated. Now two independent institutions, the Government Islamia Science College and the Government Islamia Arts/Commerce College, each with its own separate administration, operating in the same premises, alternating between morning and evening shifts.
