Metharam Hostel, Hyderabad

Metharam Hostel is situated besides Theosophical Society's Annie Besant Hall, just opposite Radio Pakistan on Miran Muhammad Shah Road. The period of construction of this hostel is not known, however, Diwan Metharam, who also built a hostel in Karachi (completed in 1893). Diwan Metharam was the elder brother of Diwan Gidumal. Initially this boarding house was meant to accommodate the young boarders of nearby Government High School. However, with the relocation of University of Sindh at Hyderabad in early 1950s, the hostel came under the control of University, where the students of Faculty of Education were made to put in. with the establishment of Board of Intermediate & Secondary Education, Hyderabad in the early 1960s, the building of Metharam hostel was again taken over the Board and continued to work here on make shift basis until it was finally relocated to its present offices in Latifabad Unit No. 9, by the mid 1960s. later on the hostel was again taken over by University of Sindh.
