Māmai Dev was born in AD circa 1330 in Kutch (now, Gujarat, India). He was the fourth spiritual guru of Bārmaţi Pańţh which is followed by Maheshvari Meghwars in Sindh, Kutch and Saurashtra. Māmai Dev was great grandson of Dhani Matang Dev, grandson of Lurang Dev, and son of Matai Dev. He lived during the periods of Jadeja Samma rulers of Kutch and Samma rulers of Thatta. The rulers of Kutchh and Sindh were great admirers of his charismatic personality. Māmai Dev anointed the royal mark on the forehead of Jadeja Samma ruler Jam Murvaji. He spent his life in Kutch and Sind across the Runn of Kutch preaching among his Meghwar followers.
Known as Mamoi Fakir in the Sindhi classical literature, Māmai Dev was a great poet, religious guru, and the seer of three worlds (Trikāl Gyāni). He composed hundreds of Bārmati Ginans in Kutchi, Sindhi and Halari languages. These sacred verses are also called Māmai Dev jo Ginān and Māmai Dev ji Vāni to be recited into the religious rituals of Bārmaţi Pańţh. Māmai Dev’s prophecies (Āgam Vānis) are very popular among the Bārmati followers and the local people of Sindh and Kutch. Māmai Dev had died in Thatta at the same place where now his shrine is erected. Every year on the 4th of the dark moon of the month Vaishakh according to the Hindu calendar, ‘Jāţar’ or pilgrimage is performed on his shrine in Makli, Thatta (Sindh, Pakistan) to commemorate his death in AD circa 1415.
