Although the exact date of the baoli or stepped well, has not been determined, but the Mughals built a large number of them for drawing water. They are found in many places, from Punjab and Sindh to Azad Kashmir. The baoli, as a source of water for the necropolis, is extremely significant. According to historical accounts, the entire Makli necropolis was once a place of festivities, when a large number of people would gather in remembrance of the departed family members and sufi saints.
