Badi-uz-Zaman, Thatta

The tomb (No. 80) has got no historical inscription7 but only Quranic verses engraved on the cenotaph. It is situated inside the bigger enclosure of Baqi Beg Tarkhan at the south-western part. The tomb introduces a new type of plain octagonal pavilion with no decorations at all and also a new type of finial over the dome. The pavilion, which has an internal diametre of 11-ft. 4-in., stands on a raised plinth, supported by eight severely plain monolithic pillars, one at each corner. The pillars, as usual, have three parts the square base, the shaft which is square in its lower part, octagonal in its upper part achieved by chamfering the corners-a technique which is seen for the first time here-with a neck (gardan) consisting of inverted jar, and the capital with insignificant four-armed volutes. These pillars support the plain lintels, which have a central block, in their middle and take the load of the dome built on the old system of over-lapping rings, which are all plain. Chajjas protrude from the parapet, which is crowned by a series of simple plain merlons, each separated from the other.
