Government High School, Sukkur

The history of this premier educational institution of upper Sindh dates back to 1857 when it was opened under the auspices of Municipal administration of Sukkur. Initially it was opened up as a middle school imparting education only at elementary level. The school premises was then comprising one big hall and four rooms, two each to the left and right sides of the main hall. Mr. Bulchand had the distinction of being its founding and the longest serving Head Master (until 1905). In 1910 the school was upgraded as a High School and was affiliated with Bombay University. In 1920, its nomenclature was changed as Tilak Municipal High School.

The school had two more branches, viz; at old Sukkur and the other on Bunder road. The former was opened in 1903 and was named after then collector of Sukkur Mr. Mules. The later was opened in 1908 and was named after its founder Mr. Gopaldas Pahlajani. Ironically, after the partition of Indo-Pak subcontinent, the Pahlajani school was closed and the building was allotted to the refugees.

The high School had its own hostel which was runned under the management of District Madressah Board in the premises of present Agha Nizamuddin Girls College. The boarding house was only meant for the Muslim Students High School or its affiliated branch of Mules Anglo Vernacular School.

Following the partition of 1947, the school lost a large number of hard working and experienced teachers who unfortunately migrated to India, which caused serious below to the very existence of this institution and at one point in July 1948 the Municipal Board had to resolve in its special meeting to close the school once and for all.

Before any decision was to be taken to finally close it down, the government had to intervene and at last took over its possession on September 1,1948. Mr. SS Mirza, who belonged to the family of Mirza Qaleech Beg, was appointed as its first Head Master. He served the school for two years (from September 1948 to January 1950).
