Sukkur Indus Dolphin Sanctuary, Sukkur





The area stretching Lansdowne Bridge and the Sukkur Barrage constitute Indus sanctuary which is jointly maintained by Sindh Wildlife Department and WWF. After Guddu Barrage, this is the second reservoir of its kind of the rare species of river Indus. It's a mammal which cannot breathe under water like a fish. According to wildlife experts, it averagely floats to the surface after every 1 minute and 20 seconds to breathe. It shares a common feature of thick layer of fate under its skin like the other mammals of its kind inhabiting in other parts of the world. The fatty layer works as an agent to maintain body temperature and conserve energy. It possesses a series of tender teeth, which are otherwise harmless. The offices of Indus Dolphin reservoir near the Lab e Mehran, on the right bank is a much frequented spot by the visitors, researchers and dolphin lovers. This is the point from where one can catch a ride through boat to experience close interaction with the rare species and take snapshots.
