Ancient Mosque River Indus, Matiari

An ancient mosque in the close proximity of the protective Bund of River Indus in Old Hala, belongs to Kalhora period in Sindh. The mosque is known as Akhund Mulla Sawan, it bears the typical architectural features of Kalhora period, hence it is domeless with load bearing walls of about 6 feet wide. Its front elevation has been badly marred with the recent renovation and reconstruction works, conducted by the local villagers. It has wooden ceiling with fresco designs.

Mr. Talat Hussain Qureshi, Pesh Imam of the mosque claims that the mosque belonged to the time of Mian Sarfraz Kalhoro. During the times immemorable, the mosque was ravaged by the super floods on number of times and also suffered other natural or manmade calamities.

During the recent renovation works, many of its ancient portions were destroyed and its precious debris was disposed oft. This is a high time that the officials of Provincial Culture Department or other agencies meant for providing protection and cover to this kind of historical sites may rise up and add this valuable historical site on their priorities.
