Jamia Mosque, Matiari

This mosque is located in the Shahi Bazaar, right between the Baaqel Pota and Jaraarr Pota Muhallas. At one place, Henrv Cusines notes that this mosque was first built in 1803 A.D (1218 H), however that is actually the year of its reconstruction by Mir Ali KhanTalpur before his rule began. An epitaph proving the point was there, too, but it got wasted during the course of periodical repairs. The mosque is based 40 feet deep into the earth.

It is said that it was first renovated by Bibi Zainab and Bibi Khadeeja Al-Kubra of the Baaqel Pota Saadat family, sisters to Syecl Muhammad Baqir. Makhdoom Muhammad Usman Matiarvi records the second instance of the reconstructing and renovating of the mosque. According to him, the mosque was expandecfon the northern side, where there was the haveli of the Sadaat family was located.This was the place where legendary Sindhi literati Hazrat Shah Abdul Karim of Bulri was born. Even today, it is said, an oil lamp is lit in the southern corner of the mosque in the name of this legendary mystic saint.

According to Mehboob Ali Samoon, the third instance of its renovation and reconstruction occurred when Mir Murad Ali Khan Talpur (later the ruler of Sindh), while travelling nearby through the river, upon laying; eye on the mosque, came to visit it, and thereby decided to renovate and reconstruct it. The Legendary Sindhi poet Shah Abdul Latif H is also said to have been visiting this mosque quite often.

The mosque has also been known for religious debates being held in it. Even today, the mosque remains the center for1 religious activities in the area. After Hafiz;3 Svea Ali Nawaz Shah, his son Syed Shehzado Shah became the caretaker of the mosque. However, after his incidental; death, his brother Syed Badruzaman Shah performs the mentioned duty till today. Before 1947, Akhund Abdullah Abbasi, and in the later times Hafiz Abbas Mughaj have been the noteworth Imams of the mosque. These days, Makhdoom Muhammad Usman is entitled to that position.
